How to Use Water More Efficiently: Irrigation Scheduling Basics

Every season as an irrigator we plan and modify our irrigation strategy. Daily or multiple times a week we make observations to evaluate the effects of that strategy.

The common checks we use to determine soil status may be to kick the dirt with our foot, excavate the rooting area with a shovel or push a soil probe into the ground. We observe the #plant #phenology looking for signs of water or #nutrient stress whether over or under supplied.

We check the #weather forecast and adjust our applied irrigation amounts or frequency. We do this to reduce the risks of negatively impacting yield or quality. There are instruments that can help us in our decision process by directly measuring the soil water status, estimating crop water use or monitoring the plant directly.
